Below the list you can watch a video shows four of our seven favorite things to do in the park and find more information about camping in the park and seeing lava. Park attractions include the following highlights, but please remember that there is far more in the park that deserves your attention (see e.g. this 1-day Hawaii Volcanoes National Park itinerary). It’s about 10 miles from the park, and it will take you about 20 minutes to get there. Hilo is about a 45-minute drive, and Kona is more than a 2-hour drive from the park. If you can’t get Hawaii Volcano National Park lodging, try this awesome hotel out.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Lodging Wrap-Up

“Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense. Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. They recommend having a ″go″ bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members. Fees All guests must pay the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance fee which is $30 per each non-commercial vehicle, $25 per motorcycle or $15 per individual travelling on foot or bicycle. If you would like to rent a tent, you may do so for an additional $40 per night, per tent (up to 2 tents). (BIVN) – Temporary closures are in effect within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, as officials are keeping a close eye on a recent spike in earthquakes under Kīlauea volcano. County and State campgrounds are located around the island.

Early visitors

The views from Volcano House are absolutely stunning, but what really makes this hotel special is its history. If you are looking for a more casual atmosphere during your stay Uncle George's Lounge is perfect. The lounge still has amazing views over the crater but you do not need reservations. Uncle George's Lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a snack, late night cocktail or relax after a day in the park. None of the guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning.

The lodge is located across the street from the visitor center. The Hawaii volcano eruption is on the south side of  Mauna Loa, one of two major volcanic craters on the island. The Thurston lava tube is an easily accessible and very interesting lava tube close to the Kīlauea Iki parking lot. A 20 minute (1/3 mile) walk through a tree fern forest and a illuminated cave-like lava tube takes you from the main road through the Thurston Lava Tube and back to the parking lot. Usually, I prefer more modern hotels to historic hotels, but this is a one-of-a-kind Hawaiian hotel.

Mauna Loa, rising 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above sea level, is the much larger neighbor to Kilauea volcano, which erupted in a residential neighborhood and destroyed 700 homes in 2018. Some of its slopes are much steeper than Kilauea’s so when it erupts, its lava can flow much faster. Rules If there are more than 2 people in your party, you can expand to 4 people per site with another tent. There is a 7-day maximum stay.Campers that choose to rent tent equipment through us may use the newly refurbished community bathroom with hot showers and toilets, located in the campground.

We have the remedy for a long day hiking through the rainforest. Enjoy at your convenience room service that offers specialty pizza delivery, healthy local juices, and ice-cold drinks. Lava from Mauna Loa’s northeast flank could take days or weeks to reach residential communities.

Cruise the Hawaiian Islands

There is so much to do in the park that many people choose to spend at least one night in (or close to) the park. There are two campsites in the park, as well as a hotel whose lounge offers stunning views of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Overnight camping is possible in the park on two separate campgrounds, one of which also has tent rentals and cabins available. The park hotel combines a great location with average and somewhat pricey rooms and is called the Volcano House (website). Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park encompasses two of the world’s most active volcanoes, making it distinct among national parks.

Campgrounds

Volcano House is the name of a series of historic hotels built at the edge of Kīlauea, within the grounds of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. The original 1877 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Volcano Art Center. The hotel in use today was built in 1941 and expanded in 1961. Trusdell said residents should look at his agency’s maps and learn how quickly lava may show up in their neighborhood. He also urged people living in one of the short-notice areas to pay attention if the summit turns red.

Lured by the volcanic forces of Pelehonuamea, visitors from around the world have gathered in various iterations of the hotel. Notably, Queen Lili‘uokalani, who reigned at the time of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, and Kalākaua, the last king of Hawaiʻi, reveled in the beauty of Kīlauea from Volcano House. Other famous guests have included Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, Amelia Earhart, Louis Pasteur, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Hawai’i Volcanoes Lodging Company, LLC is authorized to provide campground accommodations and to rent out camping equipment within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Relax on the edge of the Kilauea volcano crater in one of our vintage accommodations while enjoying the spectacular views of the caldera.

Free breakfast is also included, making it one of the best hotels close to the park! In 1866, they tore down the original shelter and replaced it with a wooden hotel with 4 bedrooms. They actually moved this, and it’s now the home of the Volcano Art Center near the visitor’s center. We stayed in Volcano House in May and really enjoyed waking up with views of the crater. If you are a light sleeper make sure to bring earplugs with you. All the more reason why Magno said officials are spreading the word about the science of the volcano and urging people to be prepared.

You will need to check with the center before hiking within the park and to check on things to do, there is a daily schedule of ranger-led activities that you can join. Comfortable rooms, some with breathtaking views offer the experience of being part of history settings in a truly unique setting. Volcano House has received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for the year 2014 for consistently receiving excellent traveler reviews. Historic Volcano House, on the rim of the crater, is the only lodging available inside the park.
