Early visitors

The views from Volcano House are absolutely stunning, but what really makes this hotel special is its history. Campgrounds

Volcano House is the name of a series of historic hotels built at the edge of Kīlauea, within the grounds of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. The original 1877 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Volcano Art Center. The hotel in use today was built in 1941 and expanded in 1961. If you are a light sleeper make sure to bring earplugs with you. All the more reason why Magno said officials are spreading the word about the science of the volcano and urging people to be prepared.

You will need to check with the center before hiking within the park and to check on things to do, there is a daily schedule of ranger-led activities that you can join. Comfortable rooms, some with breathtaking views offer the experience of being part of history settings in a truly unique setting. If you’d like a chain hotel, you’d need to look at Hilo Big Island hotels. Beside the Hawaii Volcano Hotel, you’ll find some Volcanoes National Park cabins as well, but that’s about it.

The gate of the park stays open outside the official opening hours so don’t worry about staying late or arriving early (to avoid most other visitors). You can also choose to stay in the very nearby (a few minutes from the park entrance) Volcano village if camping in the park or staying in the Volcano House hotel doesn’t appeal to you. The village is located in the same lush rainforest as the park and hosts many charming and affordable vacation rental houses. The Mauna Loa Strip Road is an 11.2 mile (one way) road which takes you to the Mauna Loa lookout point at an elevation of 6,662 feet (2031 meters). During the drive up (and down again) you pass many impressive volcanic features and get to see some sweeping views of the Kaʻu district and the Kilauea volcano. Despite all of these impressive figures Kīlauea is the most famous of the Hawaiian volcanoes, and rightly so!

Happy I finally gave this spot a try after being so close to it for so long. This is close to the most uncomfortable dine in restaurant. Philly cheese sandwich and onion rings great value. The Chicken Cheese Steak pizza and Pork Tenderloin sandwich with a basket of house chips and pepper relish and chipotle pepper relish is just amazing!

It’s undeniably too long (153 minutes), often meandering through the same points over and over again in a way that becomes numbing, but there’s something more complex here than I think its critics are willing to see.
