Below the list you can watch a video shows four of our seven favorite things to do in the park and find more information about camping in the park and seeing lava. Park attractions include the following highlights, but please remember that there is far more in the park that deserves your attention (see e.g. this 1-day Hawaii Volcanoes National Park itinerary). It’s about 10 miles from the park, and it will take you about 20 minutes to get there. Hilo is about a 45-minute drive, and Kona is more than a 2-hour drive from the park. If you can’t get Hawaii Volcano National Park lodging, try this awesome hotel out.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Lodging Wrap-Up

“Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense. Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. They recommend having a ″go″ bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members. HAWAIʻI VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK - The National Park Service explains the recent decision to close certain areas in the park due to the latest spike in earthquakes.

Fees All guests must pay the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance fee which is $30 per each non-commercial vehicle, $25 per motorcycle or $15 per individual travelling on foot or bicycle. If you would like to rent a tent, you may do so for an additional $40 per night, per tent (up to 2 tents). (BIVN) – Temporary closures are in effect within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, as officials are keeping a close eye on a recent spike in earthquakes under Kīlauea volcano. County and State campgrounds are located around the island.

Early visitors

The views from Volcano House are absolutely stunning, but what really makes this hotel special is its history. If you are looking for a more casual atmosphere during your stay Uncle George's Lounge is perfect. The lounge still has amazing views over the crater but you do not need reservations. Uncle George's Lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a snack, late night cocktail or relax after a day in the park. None of the guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning.

The lodge is located across the street from the visitor center. The Hawaii volcano eruption is on the south side of  Mauna Loa, one of two major volcanic craters on the island. The Thurston lava tube is an easily accessible and very interesting lava tube close to the Kīlauea Iki parking lot. A 20 minute (1/3 mile) walk through a tree fern forest and a illuminated cave-like lava tube takes you from the main road through the Thurston Lava Tube and back to the parking lot. Usually, I prefer more modern hotels to historic hotels, but this is a one-of-a-kind Hawaiian hotel.

Mauna Loa, rising 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above sea level, is the much larger neighbor to Kilauea volcano, which erupted in a residential neighborhood and destroyed 700 homes in 2018. Some of its slopes are much steeper than Kilauea’s so when it erupts, its lava can flow much faster. Rules If there are more than 2 people in your party, you can expand to 4 people per site with another tent. There is a 7-day maximum stay.Campers that choose to rent tent equipment through us may use the newly refurbished community bathroom with hot showers and toilets, located in the campground.

We have the remedy for a long day hiking through the rainforest. Enjoy at your convenience room service that offers specialty pizza delivery, healthy local juices, and ice-cold drinks. Lava from Mauna Loa’s northeast flank could take days or weeks to reach residential communities.

Cruise the Hawaiian Islands

There is so much to do in the park that many people choose to spend at least one night in (or close to) the park. There are two campsites in the park, as well as a hotel whose lounge offers stunning views of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Overnight camping is possible in the park on two separate campgrounds, one of which also has tent rentals and cabins available. The park hotel combines a great location with average and somewhat pricey rooms and is called the Volcano House (website). Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park encompasses two of the world’s most active volcanoes, making it distinct among national parks.

Campgrounds

Volcano House is the name of a series of historic hotels built at the edge of Kīlauea, within the grounds of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. The original 1877 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the Volcano Art Center. The hotel in use today was built in 1941 and expanded in 1961. Trusdell said residents should look at his agency’s maps and learn how quickly lava may show up in their neighborhood. He also urged people living in one of the short-notice areas to pay attention if the summit turns red.

Lured by the volcanic forces of Pelehonuamea, visitors from around the world have gathered in various iterations of the hotel. Notably, Queen Lili‘uokalani, who reigned at the time of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, and Kalākaua, the last king of Hawaiʻi, reveled in the beauty of Kīlauea from Volcano House. Other famous guests have included Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, Amelia Earhart, Louis Pasteur, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Hawai’i Volcanoes Lodging Company, LLC is authorized to provide campground accommodations and to rent out camping equipment within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Relax on the edge of the Kilauea volcano crater in one of our vintage accommodations while enjoying the spectacular views of the caldera.

Free breakfast is also included, making it one of the best hotels close to the park! In 1866, they tore down the original shelter and replaced it with a wooden hotel with 4 bedrooms. They actually moved this, and it’s now the home of the Volcano Art Center near the visitor’s center. We stayed in Volcano House in May and really enjoyed waking up with views of the crater. If you are a light sleeper make sure to bring earplugs with you. All the more reason why Magno said officials are spreading the word about the science of the volcano and urging people to be prepared.

You will need to check with the center before hiking within the park and to check on things to do, there is a daily schedule of ranger-led activities that you can join. Comfortable rooms, some with breathtaking views offer the experience of being part of history settings in a truly unique setting. Volcano House has received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for the year 2014 for consistently receiving excellent traveler reviews. Historic Volcano House, on the rim of the crater, is the only lodging available inside the park.

DINING

The historic Volcano House Big Island sits on the rim of Kilauea Caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island and has a fascinating history. You will also find some of the best places to stay near Volcano National Park in case the Volcano National Park hotels are not available. You’ll get amazing views of Kilauea from your room or balcony, which makes staying here worth every penny. Dining with a View of the Crater at Volcano House

big island volcano house

It’s one of the coolest places to stay on the Big Island. Since this is a historic hotel, there are no elevators. That means you’ll need to haul your luggage up a few stairs if you are on the ground level or a full flight of stairs if you are on the second floor.

Explore the National Park Service

The bar provides delicious snacks as well as an engaging view of the volcano’s caldera. Plenty of Dining OptionsOpen for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can relax and cool down at the Rim at any stage of your volcanoes adventure. And if you’re a guest of the hotel, room service from the restaurant is available throughout the day. Finally, if you are an active service member or have served in the US military you can also stay in the Kilauea Military Center (KMC, website). The KMC is located inside the park and offers 90 guest cottages and apartments with one, two, or three bedrooms, and a 110-bed dormitory. This is a section of the Crater Rim Drive near the Devastation Trail parking lot that is open to hikers only.

Don't worry the average temperature is 67 to 73-degrees. They even have a lending library with natural history, cultural studies and children's bedtime books available to check out. I always wonder what early guests saw and enjoyed while visiting the park.

What did we think of the dining options?

Wake up to the sunrise and the sound of rare Hawaiian songbirds. These two viewpoints are the main selling point of this small hike, as this is without doubt the best place the see the dramatically enlarged Halemaʻumaʻu crater. One very good way to explore the chain of craters road is with the help of a GPS assisted audio guide.

Military Appreciation Rates

The Island of Hawai'i consists of five coalesced volcanoes, a submarine volcano that has already subsided below sea level, and another, Lō‘ihi Seamount, that has yet to grow to sea level. Ft. | 1-4 guestsA place where the curious adventurer can enjoy a truly unique hotel experience. Inside these cozy walls, rustic cabin accents add an authentic, historic feel. The Volcano House The KÄ«lauea Visitor Center is your first stop after paying the fee to enter the park. Park Rangers and volunteers at the visitor center will provide you with information on the current conditions. Sunset Views of the CraterPerhaps the most defining feature of the restaurant, the dining room’s position overlooking the Kilauea caldera and the Halemaumau Crater is a stunning backdrop.

In 2022, the park closed the summit of Mauna Loa weeks ahead of its historic and nearly two-week eruption. As a result, no evacuations or search and rescue missions were necessary. One of the biggest attractions throughout the entire state of Hawaii remains the expansive, geographically diverse Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Campgrounds

Experts say it would take just a few hours for lava to reach homes closest to vents on the volcano, which last erupted in 1984. Looming at the edge with over 30 rooms that peer into the Kilauea’s Halemaumau crater, this hotel truly lives up to its name as ‘Volcano House’. Guests describe their stays at Volcano House as magical, with special reference given to the stupendous view of the crater, even from the on-site hotel. If looking for souvenirs at an affordable price, then the Volcano House has two gift shops with everything from mini-decorative plates to postcards.

Plus, it’s right across the street from the visitor’s center, and there are food options on the main level. It’s the best place to stay at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Hawaii Volcano House is the ONLY hotel near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Most of the other accommodations are camping or vacation rental homes. If you’d like a chain hotel, you’d need to look at Hilo Big Island hotels. Beside the Hawaii Volcano Hotel, you’ll find some Volcanoes National Park cabins as well, but that’s about it.

The gate of the park stays open outside the official opening hours so don’t worry about staying late or arriving early (to avoid most other visitors). You can also choose to stay in the very nearby (a few minutes from the park entrance) Volcano village if camping in the park or staying in the Volcano House hotel doesn’t appeal to you. The village is located in the same lush rainforest as the park and hosts many charming and affordable vacation rental houses. The Mauna Loa Strip Road is an 11.2 mile (one way) road which takes you to the Mauna Loa lookout point at an elevation of 6,662 feet (2031 meters). During the drive up (and down again) you pass many impressive volcanic features and get to see some sweeping views of the Kaʻu district and the Kilauea volcano. Despite all of these impressive figures Kīlauea is the most famous of the Hawaiian volcanoes, and rightly so!

big island volcano house

The Big Island volcano has been making news in 2018 as the Kilauea Crater erupts and spills molten lava into the rural neighborhoods of the east tip of the island. The Visitor Center is a short distance beyond the park entrance station where there is plenty of parking. If you’re looking for a sophisticated dining experience be sure to check out these delicious fine dining restaurants. In a 30-minute call we help you set up the trip of your dreams.

However, the gradual strengthening of seismic swarms suggests that an eruption in the summit region of Kīlauea or beneath the upper East Rift Zone in the park is one potential outcome. The Big Island resorts and hotels are on the west shore.Kailua Kona and Waikoloa are quite far from the eruption and visitors will not be effected by the constantly changing volcanic action. Walk or hike over 150 miles of park trails and through the lava tube and rainforests. Convenient LocationLocated within the grounds of the park itself, it’s certainly a popular resting place for wary travelers coming to or from a day of exploration and excitement. While you’ll likely want to grab a reservation to avoid disappointment, it’s possible to walk or hike to the restaurant from your previous destination with ease.

You can even ask for a to-go cup to take with you out into the park. The Wi-Fi did not work for us during our stay but the hotel does say it is available. You may need to check in the lobby or other common areas if it does not reach your room.

Happy I finally gave this spot a try after being so close to it for so long. This is close to the most uncomfortable dine in restaurant. Philly cheese sandwich and onion rings great value. The Chicken Cheese Steak pizza and Pork Tenderloin sandwich with a basket of house chips and pepper relish and chipotle pepper relish is just amazing!

Barker Ranch

Did you know that there are currently twenty-five different museum submarines in the United States that you can get in and explore? Most are decommissioned, retired submarines, saved from being scrapped after being deemed as unfit for further military service to the Navy. Many of them saw action during World War II or played a role in the Cold War and/or Vietnam. Some were used for training, experimenting, or research for the development of today's submarine force.

It is also here for all those who work and volunteer on the submarine museums to share ideas, talk about fund raising efforts, find restoration advice, promote special events, etc. SUBMARINEMUSEUMS.ORG forum member and amateur radio enthusiast Bill Chaikin (username "KA8VIT") was kind enough to share his videos of the USS Cod in Cleveland, OH. Visit KA8VIT's USS Cod Videos page to see some great video footage, even a 25 minute video tour of the entire boat! The house at Cieldo Drive was demolished in the 1990s; the new house on the property has a different house number and is owned by Full House creator Jeff Franklin. Dennis Wilson got involved with the Manson Family when he picked up two Family girls hitchhiking by the side of the road; he brought them to his Rustic Canyon house, they hung out, everyone left. He returned home late that night to find Charles Manson in his house with about a dozen, mostly female guests. Manson and the guests stayed for a few months, at a cost of $100,000 to Wilson.

Tate House

Wish I lived in Dayton so I could come here more often. Well maybe not because I'd probably weigh 100 pounds more. If I owned a restaurant, I'd want it to be like this. Many hold some various record, some were used in movies, and a few have rare operational, functioning equipment. All of them have a following of hard-working volunteers that keep them going.

house that jack built

Notorious for a Cannes response that included both a standing ovation and hundreds of walk-outs, “The House That Jack Built” is finally available to American audiences, in limited release and on VOD in a slightly-edited R-rated cut. The “thrust” of von Trier’s vision remains to such a degree that it’s even hard to believe this version got an R (which raises the key question of “why bother cutting it at all?” but that’s for another piece). It’s one that compares artistry with murder as the director draws direct lines between creating art and taking lives.

The Jack House is now owned by the City of San Luis Obispo. Volunteer docents offer guided tours on Sundays from April through November, and the house is also open for holiday celebrations and special events. This is the only Neutra designed home that is available for tours.

PCH is a really busy road so it won’t always feel easy to stop for the photo. His performance is very unsettling but also unique, which is hard to do with the thoughtful serial killer stereotype. Stories like this that delve into the mind of a killer are both very interesting and also one of the more disturbing things a horror movie can do for me. To story of “This Is the House That Jack Build” uses the cumulative tale technique, in which the events are progressively narrated leading to an end where the interlinking becomes obvious. Each sentence in the story is an example of an increasingly deeply nested relative clause.

I visited the Hollyhock House in February of 2020 right before things got crazy with COVID-19. Thanks to a lecture series that was happening I was able to get visit this amazing home for free. Docents were placed throughout the home to offer insight but it was nice to get to walk around on our own. The biggest bummer is that you cannot take photography indoors.

As ever, this is a pseudo-American Psycho, set in an America that looks heartsinkingly like the forests of Denmark or perhaps Germany, locations in which the appearance of American automobiles and American actors look almost surreally out of place. There is supposedly a place called “Carlson’s Supermarket” near one of these very remote chalets, and although we don’t see this store, we see its brown bag with its logo. I don’t think I have ever seen a more obviously faked artefact in a film in my life. After he marks red circles around her breasts with a marker, she becomes frightened and approaches a policeman, but he dismisses her and Jack as drunk. Jack later binds her before cutting off her breasts with a knife. He pins one of the breasts to the policeman's car and fashions the other into a wallet.

Famous Houses in Los Angeles That You Must See In Person

Jack has killed women, mainly women, and in a gloatingly sadistic manner – he has dismembered them and kept their body parts as souvenirs. But the most purely evil thing he has ever done is shown in flashback when Jack, as a boy, amputates the foot of a sweet yellow duckling with a pair of pliers, and then places the poor animal back in the water to watch it wobble round and round. This moment really did look absolutely, horribly real.

It was first built in 1932 for Neutra and his family. It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight. This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games.

This is another home that is still on my to-visit list. So, is “The House That Jack Built” hollow provocation or dense commentary? It’s undeniably too long (153 minutes), often meandering through the same points over and over again in a way that becomes numbing, but there’s something more complex here than I think its critics are willing to see.

Critics Reviews

You can find more of them in the Los Angeles House Museum Guide. Whether you are local to Los Angeles or are planning to visit this blog has been created with you in mind. I hope that by sharing my adventures I am able to help you discover new and exciting places in LA. This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique. The neighbors may not have been thrilled with what the home became but it looks like something really fun to see in person.

Most of all, like the serial killer who literally tells a cop about his crimes, von Trier just wants you to pay attention to him. Repulsed or fascinated—he doesn’t really care as long as you see him. In the fifth incident, Jack has detained six men in his freezer, intending to kill all of them with a single bullet. One of the men, an army veteran, informs Jack that he has the wrong ammunition. He goes to get the right ammunition from a friend, SP. SP phones the police, since they're looking for Jack, who then stabs SP through the throat.

The area is stunning and has great views of the city too. It is free to visit the grounds though occasionally the opportunity will become available to tour the inside for a fee. You can read about my visit here in my post on Greystone Mansion. Failed architect, engineer and vicious murderer Jack narrates the details of some of his most elaborately orchestrated crimes, each of them a towering piece of art that defines his life's work as a serial killer for twelve years.

The garage was used as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future and the living room shown above was used in Zathura. I have visited the house for free on two different occasions. You can visit it for free on the Museums of the Arroyo Day or during the City of Pasadena’s ArtNight.

In the freezer, he arranges the frozen corpses he has collected over the years into the shape of a house. As police break in, he enters his "house" and follows Verge into a hole in the floor, entering Hell. Jack, a failed architect from Washington State, recounts how he became a serial killer to Virgil—whom he refers to as Verge—as Verge leads Jack through the nine circles of Hell. Each of Jack's crimes, depicted through flashback, feature social commentary from Jack and Verge. Originally conceived as a television project by von Trier, The House That Jack Built began production in Sweden in 2016. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, marking von Trier's return to the festival after more than six years.

This was one of the first homes I ever toured in LA and fell in love with learning about the history of the unique homes in the area. You can read more about my visits to the Gamble House here. California Love: 25 Designers Who Are All About the West Coast

The accomplished artist, architect, and interior designer, Rodrigo Vargas founded RVD in 2009. Today a thriving international, full-service interior design firm with a diverse and talented team. RVD creates award-winning design concepts for Five-Star luxury hotels and resorts, multifamily real estate projects, restaurants, and high-end residential projects worldwide. Our aim was to design a structure asserting itself as a design museum without disturbing the ambience of the natural environment surrounding it. In order to achieve this, we decided to place 80% of the floor space of the museum underground.

JAC Interiors

Designed by architect Tadao Ando, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Nestled amidst a serene, open public space, seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. The decision to submerge 80% of the building’s floor space underground was a deliberate choice to preserve the tranquility of the environment. The building’s distinctive feature, inspired by Issey Miyake’s “A Piece of Cloth,” is the roof, which is formed as “A Piece of Iron Sheet.” The creation of the 54-meter-long steel plate for the roof demanded exceptional craftsmanship and advanced techniques. The success of this ambitious project is a tribute to the skilled craftsmen who meticulously executed the design without compromise, showcasing the pinnacle of Japanese construction expertise. Ando’s meticulous spatial planning is evident in the seamless flow of the museum’s interior.

Japanese Urban Legends

Tongue-in-cheek merchandise — including towels, sleeping masks and aluminum trays — has been developed by Studio Temp to mark the initiative. There are many interior decor guidelines to follow that are practiced and avoided for various reasons, but a rule against mixing metals is not one of them. Mixing a variety of metal finishes creates a polished environment with the sense of an interior space being collected over time.

Beauty

Indeed, it required highly advanced techniques to process the 54 meter-long plate of steel used as the roof. This project would not have succeeded without the skills and techniques offered by all the craftsmen involved in its construction. People on the site bravely tackled the difficulties inherent in accommodating the requirements of the design without any compromise.

This Exhibition proposes that the meaning of designed objects ought, rather, to come from open dialogue with constituent raw materials. Humanity has been surrounded by such materials since the dawn of history, and people have created something through interchange with these primordial things.

Opulence is on full display in David Levine’s dining room. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. Guide to Royal Caribbean's Single and Studio staterooms

royal caribbean singles cruise

And when it comes to babies and toddlers, nap time is nap time, regardless of the time zone. Planning a cruise vacation alone with your child helps you keep those routines, as you'll have a steady home base and can tailor your days to your preference. Small-group fun doesn’t stop with shore excursions—there also are lots of places and ways to participate on board, too. Get in on a cooking class or a dance class, or bravely belt out a tune at karaoke night. Single retirees with more freedom and perhaps a larger budget can look into luxury lines like Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, and Silversea. These lines go the extra mile to cater to singles, offering reduced supplement charges and specialized meet and greets.

Night France, Italy & Greece Cruise

To top it off, the cruise line makes connecting with fellow cruisers easy through dedicated social media groups, setting the stage for an unforgettable trip. Jenna DeLaurentis enjoys exploring new ports of call around the world on a cruise ship, learning about new cultures, discovering beautiful landscapes, and trying diverse cuisine. She loves to get active while at port, whether cycling through mountains in the Caribbean or scuba diving under the sea. It’s also nice, though, that if I did not want to be social, I could have stayed to myself. There is no requirement to go on a solo cruise with the intention of making new friends or always chatting with other guests and crew.

Tips For Traveling Solo

Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships. Another cruise line that works well for young singles is Virgin Voyages, which is child-free and has rooms and activities designed for singles. Cruising singles in their 30s have slightly different vacation needs from their younger peers. Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Carnival are all still great choices for this age group, whether you're traveling on your own or with a group of friends.

Special Considerations for Solo Travelers

There is something incredibly freeing about doing everything on your own time when you’re on vacation. By packing wisely and keeping these special considerations in mind, you can ensure that your solo cruise on Royal Caribbean will be a rewarding experience. Making friends onboard proved to be extremely easy and having a group to hang out with certainly enhanced my experience. One place that proved to be a fantastic social environment onboard were the hot tubs! Hanging out in the hot tub always led to interesting conversations with fellow passengers, several of which I connected with throughout the rest of the cruise. Understandably, safety is one of the biggest factors on people's minds when it comes to venturing on a solo vacation.

Solo cruises on Royal Caribbean

These cruises “can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee”, and they cover an extensive range of destinations, from Europe to the Caribbean and Singapore to Australia. It has fitted its older ships with 14 ‘Solo Staterooms’, all of which offer magnificent sea views. Norwegian was the first cruise company to build ships with cabins and lounge areas that were specifically for solo travellers, and there are now around 1,000 solo cabins across its ships. Daily activities will keep you entertained while onboard, while organised excursions or solo trips let you see a magnificent range of towns and cities at your leisure. Solo-specific events mean that meeting other travellers is as easy as sitting down to dinner, while you’ll have a comfortable solo cabin to come back to at the end of each day.

Your Next Vacation Should Be A Cruise

I, however, found the way that works best for me and I am already looking forward to my next solo cruise. If you have 340 or more of the Royal Caribbean loyalty points you can get a reduced price on the single supplement fee. These don’t incur the single supplement fare, although worth reminding you that these won’t necessarily be the lowest-priced staterooms available.

Although we don't have specific pricing for single occupancy, we do offer studio staterooms on select ships. The advantage of these studio staterooms is that they can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee, which doubles the cost of the cruise fare. We offer an inside studio stateroom, virtual balcony staterooms - as well as a super studio ocean view stateroom with balcony - and these rooms range in size from 101 square feet to 199 square feet. They're the perfect option for someone who wants to cruise alone and are available on Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.

Ten years and 30 countries later, I still believe that traveling alone is one of the best ways to see the world. When you travel solo, you're likely to make new friends, develop newfound confidence and experience the freedom of waking up in a destination and doing the activities you're passionate about, all on your own timeline. If you’re traveling solo on a cruise and looking to meet new people, there are several ways to do so.

How to Book a Royal Caribbean Singles Cruise: A Step-by-Step Guide

I'm more likely to strike up a conversation with a stranger and join group experiences and I'm often seen as more approachable by other travelers than when I travel with a friend. Because I'm not beholden to anyone else's schedule, I can easily join and leave travel groups as I please. I've made some of my best friends while traveling solo and we now often plan trips together. My spouse and I met because he was traveling alone through California, my home state, and I gave him an impromptu tour of Southern California. At the age of 19, I purchased a plane ticket to Nicaragua and ventured on my first-ever solo trip to Central America.

With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation. From budget-friendly inside rooms to the plush super studio ocean view stateroom with private balconies, there’s something for everyone. And forget about the exorbitant single supplement fees; Royal Caribbean has options that won’t break the bank.

I don’t normally eat alone at restaurants at home, so I was not sure what my dining experience would be like onboard. Going into my cruises, I planned to eat most meals at the buffet and spend my days in port or at sea exploring solo. When it's time to slow your heart rate, escape for a spa treatment or perch yourself at one of the many bars onboard and swap travel tales with the bartender. Some guided multi-day tours cater to solo travelers, which is a bit of an oxymoron when you consider that you'll have travel partners from sunrise until sunset for the duration of your trip.

Single parents who vacation with their youngsters might want to add Disney Cruise Line to the list. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common. If you'd like to find companionship at sea, here are our top tips for making the most of a singles cruise. Cruising solo makes it all about you—what time you go to bed at night, what time you get up in the morning, what and when you eat, what you do and don’t do.

Studio staterooms are smaller than standard rooms, but they are meant to have enough space for a single guest to live in during their cruise. In essence, a Royal Caribbean Singles Cruise promises an experience filled with comfort, excitement, and opportunities for meaningful connections. Sure, if you’re flying solo and thinking about hopping onto a Royal Caribbean cruise, you’re in for a treat! During my time on Independence of the Seas, I would go to events onboard that skewed more social, such as trivia, and also chat with the bartenders and crew throughout the ship. Before my cruises, I was feeling nervous about what it would be like to go on a cruise alone. Check for any meet and greets events that are often held at bars or other social areas on the ship and can be a great way to break the ice and connect with other passengers.

From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal. Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard, but also Viking and Princess Cruises. These lines offer port-intensive itineraries, so book ship tours to connect with like-minded folks on board since you likely won't spend as much time lounging around the pool. The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships.

Not all ships have single staterooms, but we have highlighted those that do, and in some cases, double occupancy is cheaper. I enjoy being social and talking to new people, so I find this as a huge advantage of cruising solo. Another way around the fee is if you have at least 340 or more points in the Crown and Anchor Society (Royal Caribbean's customer loyalty program). If you are that high up in the system, the single supplement cruise fare is reduced to 150% from 200%. And when you're in port, be sure to introduce your child to the flavors of the destination, especially with foods they get to try for the first time.

I’m Bobby Pham, but you can call me “Bobby on Cruise.” I’ve been cruising the high seas and exploring the world for years, and I’m thrilled to share my passion and expertise with you. On Alaskan itineraries, layering is key—bring thermal clothing, water-resistant outerwear, and hiking boots. European voyages call for a blend of casual and upscale clothing to match the continent’s diverse range of activities and cultural norms.

For dinner in the main dining room, you must sign up for either Your Time dining (you go whenever you want) or Traditional Dining (you have a fixed table and time for dinner). This is a notable change for the brand from just a couple of decades ago. There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. During the day (10 AM to 6 AM), various items are available at a la carte prices. Selections on the All Day Menu include salads, sandwiches, burgers, wings, desserts, and more.

When it comes to entrees, you’ll find plenty of options from both land and sea. The portion sizes are generous, but don’t be shy if you want to order two entrees. At this New England-style seafood shack, you can order everything from buckets of fried seafood to steamed shellfish by the pound. Don't forget about everyone's favorites, clam chowder and lobster rolls. No cruise experience is complete without on-demand soft serve.

The partnership aims to introduce guests to a diverse range of culinary offerings, showcasing Emeril's culinary expertise and adding a touch of gourmet dining to the cruise experience. The menus feature a variety of dishes, including seafood specialties and desserts, designed to cater to different tastes and preferences. Carnival Cruise Line and Emeril Lagasse have entered into a partnership to enhance the onboard dining experience for Carnival's guests.

Carnival Kids Menus

At times, you may find special lunch menus in the dining room, too, such as the "Taste of the World" menu. It might, for example, be Pizzeria del Capitano or Pizza Pirate. From my experience, pizza offerings vary greatly, as not all types are cooked at the same time.

For comparison purposes, Cucina is $24 for adults and $11 for children on other ships in the fleet. Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse is another one of the Carnival Celebration restaurants. The BBQ joint is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Carnival Celebration.

Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Sushi Express

This special event features menu items like Grinch’s Pancakes, steak and eggs, red velvet french toast, and green eggs and ham. If you’ve sailed with Carnival before, this menu IS different than the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast. And sadly, Horton’s cereal crusted french toast is no longer on the menu. These Carnival Kitchen classes are available for cruisers to book for $45-$60 per person. Some of the options include Pasta Master, Sushi 101, Cake Workshop, Tailgate Party, and more.

Carnival’s MDR menus have recently been enhanced fleetwide and now also feature an “Emeril Selects” section. Do you have plans to cruise on the new Carnival Celebration? What is your favorite from the list of Carnival Celebration restaurants?

Carnival VEGAN Dinner Menus

In line with Carnival's two-entree limit in the main dining room, guests now have to pay for any additional lobster past the first two entrees. Carnival Conquest, for instance, doesn't have the specialty seafood restaurant that can be found on Carnival Celebration. Moreover, longer voyages (i.e., Carnival Journeys) will have additional dining room menus that those on shorter cruises won't get to experience. Is free all sailing long for guests on Carnival Jubilee; on Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras, your first meal at Chibang is included and additional visits are only $8 per person. New main dining room menus will also include offerings from Carnival’s popular specialty dining restaurants, so more guests may experience the wide variety of great food offered across the fleet. In the past, embarking on a cruise meant encountering the same routine selection of beverages across all venues.

Cruises

Where you won't find Carnival ships, notably, is in Asia, South America or, for the most part, Europe. Unlike other big cruise brands such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises, Carnival doesn't spread its vessels around the world to draw a fly-in crowd. Aimed squarely at Americans, its trips are all about cruising close to home at a reasonable price. The self-described "fun ship" line is the king of short, affordable, fun-focused cruises from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico and other nearby destinations. No matter where you live in the U.S., you're probably within a few hours of a Carnival ship.

For the most part, Carnival ships sail relatively short voyages of three to eight nights. The overarching idea for Carnival's ship deployments is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach one of the line's ships by car, saving the cost of flights. Note that the Carnival fleet is scheduled to grow over the next year with two more new vessels. As noted above, the line has ordered another sister vessel to Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration that will be ready to sail in late 2023. However, with two exceptions, they're not giants by today's standards. Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way.

This is for all dishes not just lobster like some other cruise lines. There are several dining options on the list of Carnival Jubilee restaurants that are included in your cruise fare. These include the typical main dining room as well as the cruise ship buffet. The casual Seafood Shack is located on the Lido deck near the new Street Eats on Carnival Celebration. This counter service restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily varying times from 12 to 10 PM depending on the port of call. There are several dining options on the list of Carnival Celebration restaurants that are included in your cruise fare.

As part of this collaboration, Emeril Lagasse, a renowned chef known for his New Orleans-style cuisine, has created exclusive menus and signature dishes for select dining venues across Carnival's fleet of ships. With so many great complimentary offerings, you certainly do not have to pay extra for dining on Carnival Jubilee (if you don’t want to). Though, this new ship also offers a few specialty restaurants that come with an up-charge. The menu at Fahrenheit 555 features upscale offerings like shrimp cocktail, lobster bisque, risotto, and premium cuts of beef. For those who don’t eat beef, other entree selections include chicken, lobster tail, and sea bass.

Carnival also offers dedicated tween and teen programs on ships for children aged 12 to 17. The younger children in this age range (12-14) are grouped into what's known as Circle C and have their own dedicated lounge on ships. It's a place to get together to talk, watch movies, play video games and take part in other activities. Carnival is also well known for the Punchliner Comedy Clubs on its ships, which draw quality comedians and can get a little raucous late at night with adult-only performances. Carnival also uses its big theaters for lots of interactive shows that involve you, the passenger, getting a little silly.

BlueIguana is a Chipotle-style restaurant, with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos. Created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri, Guy's Burger Joint offers burgers that beat anything you'll find around the pool on other mass-market ships and even most luxury vessels. Located on Deck 17 above the Lido deck, Guy’s Burger Joint serves up some of the best burgers at sea.

Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Alcoholic beverages are charged a la carte unless you have a drink package that covers the price. Some ships have both Bonsai Teppanyaki and Bonsai Sushi or just one of the two. When I was on Carnival Vista, for instance, they only had Bonsai Sushi. Similarly, Carnival Conquest had a Bonsai Sushi Express stall in the buffet.

This exclusive multicourse dining experience hosted by the ship's master executive chef takes place in untraditional spaces like the galley or library to give you a behind-the-scenes VIP feel. The dinner menu itself changes based on what's in season or local to the port, but it always includes wine pairings and, of course, dessert. The main dining room serves a sit-down breakfast and the nightly three-course dinner that's included in your cruise fare.
